Emerson Hall houses Harvard University’s Department of Philosophy. Built in 1905, the building has a long academic history—its third floor originally served as The Psychological Laboratory, containing 27 rooms that included a soundproof room, a photography room, classrooms, animal rooms, a wood shop, an instrument room, and a Vivarium. Today, the third floor contains a student lounge, lecture hall, seminar rooms, and offices.

The project included new mechanical equipment and controls, sprinkler modifications, and new finishes—all selected to remain consistent with the historic character of the facility.

How Were Former Conference Rooms Converted Into Graduate Student Workspaces?

The conversion required rethinking how existing rooms could serve a fundamentally different purpose. Former conference rooms needed to support individual graduate student workstations, data infrastructure, and the focused work requirements of researchers—not the open, flexible configuration of a shared meeting space.
