An unused mill building on the grounds of Atria Marland Place on Stevens Street is being renovated for additional units of senior housing. Atria Senior Living, a company with assisted-living developments around the country, has hired South Coast Improvement Company of Marion to undertake a $4 million renovation of the former Marland Manufacturing Co. adjacent to its current Andover facility.
Once renovated, the old textile mill building will become part of Atria’s complex of apartments and other amenities for “older active adults” in town. The interior of the old mill will be completely gutted and demolished and the entire brick facade will be repointed as part of the project. The renovated building will feature new electrical, HVAC, plumbing and life safety features; new framing and reconfiguration of existing space to accommodate administrative needs, site work outside to ensure proper drainage and a new elevator in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Various historical aspects of the building will be maintained as part of the work.
“As a general contractor, we love new construction as well as the next contractor, but there’s something special about restoring these historic buildings and bringing them into the 21st century that brings a great feeling of satisfaction,” Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement Company, said in a release. Work on Atria Marland Place began Nov. 1, with completion anticipated in the spring. The project represents South Coast Improvement’s second recent one for Atria Senior Living. The contractor just completed work on a $3.5 million renovation project at Atria Crossroads Place in Waterford, Conn.
