South Coast Improvement Company Moves Forward With Four MIT Renovations

Oct 3, 2016 | News

South Coast Improvement Company has been working on four renovation projects on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus. The projects consist of two specialized laboratories, office spaces, and their main campus bookstore.

South Coast Improvement is reconfiguring existing office space to accommodate a greater number of offices inside Building 46 at the Brain and Cognitive Sciences. New walls have been constructed and finishes are in the works, all respectively maintaining the LEED certification of the building.

Additionally, South Coast Improvement Company is constructing a laboratory with expectations to be completed by late fall. The Marelli Lab is being constructed to serve the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. A conference room will be renovated as a wet lab to satisfy unique requirements for research conduction and include highly specialized systems and equipment.

Being the first wet lab renovation for South Coast Improvement Company, the general contractor’s extensive background in occupied space construction has served them well, as they are successfully navigating sensitive environments and creating schedules that respect on-going research without disturbance.

South Coast Improvement Company is also reconfiguring a large storage space into a specialized holding room at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. This work environment requires that all personnel pass through the existing and operational laboratory space to reach the construction area.

The MIT Press Bookstore is a fast track full tenant fit out of a 2,500 square foot building where the current bookstore will relocate to. Currently the bookstore is located at 292 Main Street, across from the Marriot Hotel and the MIT Coop. The increased space and updated furnishing and finishes will accommodate an expanding selection of publications and a newly immersive experience for the visitors- which is also expected to grow.

South Coast Improvement Company expects to complete the four projects on the same timeline, and hopes that a seamless execution will further strengthen their working relationship with MIT, and gain them a new audience in the bio-tech industry.
