The Luck of the Irish

Apr 5, 2019 | Newsletter

For many, no month of March is complete without a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Here at South Coast Improvement, the day takes on a little different tone as we have four “lads” who hale from the Emerald Isle—Gareth O’Neill, Alex Browne, Brian Donnelly and Phillip McCusker.

You probably have heard me mention Gareth here before. He’s been with us for about four years and has risen from site super to business development executive to now project executive.

Alex Browne is one of our rising star project managers—we have several. There’s a bit more to his story as he is also managing director of the Celtic Thunder, an incredibly popular singing group from Ireland that tours the U.S. and Canada.

Brian Donnelly and Philip McCusker are site superintendents, and both show tremendous promise.

They talk about the “luck of the Irish”. I never put a whole lot of stock in that. We are very fortunate in that we have developed a talented and hard-working next generation of professionals here at South Coast Improvement. These gentlemen are four among several we have in our employ who have helped us rise to our current level of success and will be the future of this company.

Perhaps when they talk about the luck of the Irish it has more to do with timing, being in the right place at the right time. We have several trends going on now that capitalize on our experience and talents.

For example, our experience with medical offices and assisted living facilities, particularly those with memory care units, helped us secure build-outs for urgent care centers for SouthCoast Health System. These build-outs generally took us about 10 weeks to complete with a process we could duplicate for any number of other buildouts in other niches.

One of those niches is the up and coming marijuana dispensary industry. We recently finished one in Brockton last month. The buildout has a lot of similarities to the urgent care centers, which is why we’re actively marketing in that area. That included exhibiting at NECANN in Boston last week.

Another area where we are strong is in laboratories. With the addition of StemSolutions to our team—I mentioned this last month—we are positioned extremely well to be a one-stop-shop for anybody looking to build a lab from scratch or renovate an existing facility.

While our “Irish Thunder” has been part of this movement, it would be unfair to call it luck or give credit to anybody but our entire team for the success we have enjoyed. Like I said, we will call it good fortune and timing to have a great combination of senior construction executives and managers and a talented next generation of professionals with the energy and drive to get after these current trends.

When you put it that way, I guess it is okay to say we’re lucky.
